5LG HW301G - The ESSENTIAL REVIEW FOR HOME CINEMAS AND GAMING
By The VIPER!
The LG HW301G is an excellent projector for those on a budget and looking for a small EVERYDAY use HD projector with a BIG screen size. The unit is small and very portable with the included padded storage case. You can take this on a trip to watch movies or games, or as a portable computer monitor. It has a great looking UI with LOTS of features and adjustments to tweak and poke with for the person that needs to get the image just right. It can be mounted on the ceiling with a tripod mount or using 4 small mounting screws on the bottom of the unit. The inputs are exceptional, now with HDMI, Composite, Component, and VGA for PCs. You should be able to connect almost anything to this projector. I have it connected to my 7.1 AV receiver, my home theater looks and sounds fantastic.I use my projector EVERYDAY and with a LED projector I do NOT feel like I am burning up an expensive projector lamp,or am worrying about cooling down and warming up slowly. It will also be easy on my power bill. The 30,000 hour 100 watt LEDs work great for this reason. My primary purpose for this projector is watching movies, playing console and PC games. I would also like to use it for web surfing from time to time. I will primarily cover these uses in my review. I currently have it mounted to the ceiling, facing my 102 inch (8.5 foot) screen made from white blackout cloth.Physical look & feel of the projector:The casing is a hard glossy white PVC plastic. The front is grooved steel giving the little projector a professional quality appearance. It has vents on each side and out the front. 5 mounting holes on the bottom (4 mounts + 1 Tripod mount) and 4 rubber feet and one leg that raises and lowers near the front. The case is small, even smaller than the LG HS201, you could take this anywhere. Its also very light weight. Altogether the HW301G is a very nice looking quality unit.Brightness, 300 ANSI Lumens:There are allot of people that say that LEDs cant produce enough light to be comparable with lamp projectors. They have most likely have NEVER seen a LED projector. There is a huge difference between LCD/DLP and LED. With standard bulbs, your shooting white light through a LCD or a color wheel. With LED's you have RED,GREEN and BLUE LEDs making RED, GREEN and Blue light. The color is much richer and more brilliant. The 300 ANSI Lumen rating is not quite the same as is with other bulb projectors. I can have 2 60 watt CFL bulbs in the back of the room on and still see images on the projector with no problems. Of course the image is much better in a controlled light environment with lights out or dimmed and shades drawn, as with all projectors. The darkened room completes the home theater experience of watching movies and games on the BIG screen.Showing movies Blu-ray, DVD & VHS :I have watched VHS, DVDs and Blu-ray movies on the projector. The 1280-800 native resolution really makes the difference when compared to other projectors. The image is bright and movies appear smoothly with little or no motion blur. While other projectors may have 1080p resolution, getting this resolution in an LED projector and at a price that will not break your bank account is most likely several years off. Aspect Ratio: (Technical)I have heard of people on forums complaining that there is an aspect ratio issue with this model. There is NOT. The native aspect ratio is 16/10, when displaying images in 16/9 the image is scaled correctly. I have yet to see any distortion of the aspect ratio. There are controls in the menu to set the ratio ANY way you like or SET BY PROGRAM to have the image scaled to the resolution being displayed. Also if you prefer to have the projector set to stretch standard resolution 4/3 images, they will look much better in a 16/10 aspect ratio than stretched to a 16/9 aspect ratio. The overall result are images that are not stretched out but displayed neatly, with both newer Blu-ray HD content and older DVD and VHS media.Displaying Console Games Wii, XBOX 360, Classics: (XBOX, NES, Sega Gensis, Etc.)The HW301G displays console games of all types very well. Just as with movies the picture is bright and clear, motion is smooth, no motion blur. The image is not stretched or skewed. Your friends will be blown away with multiplayer games at screen sizes up to 100 inches. I put Dungeon Defenders and Mario Kart up for fast action and bright graphics. Everything was just as awesome as you would imagine. 4 play split screen was incredible with 50 inch screens for each player.OLD Game systems (Technical) You can connect an OLD game console with a RF adapter (Atari, NES, Gensis model 1, Etc) by using a VCR or RF to composite modulator. Setting the VCR to channel 3/4 and plugging the VCR into the projector via composite video cables. See instructions online for more information. [...]Displaying internet text and PC games:PC Games like League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Source and Nitronic RUSH(A GREAT FREE PC GAME) Looked and played fantastic. Text in menus was easliy read and game play looked smooth and brilliant.Just as in console games the projector really shines as a large format display. Movies from YouTube and Netflix Streaming also looked great as well.Displaying TEXT on the internet. This is where the limitations of the projector were seen. The projector displays diamond shaped pixels, instead of the normal grid as a LCD monitor would. These Diamonds help smooth the sharp edges of the pixels out, removing the screen door effect you get from many projectors. This however makes small text from computer displays appear fuzzy. Making it difficult to read computer text for long periods of time. While on the internet you can press CTL [+] to increase the size of the text displayed. This makes the text easier to read. [Adjusting the Clear Type Text] under [Fonts] in the control panel helped with this as well. (XP users can download the Clear Type Tuner) I did not really get a projector for this purpose so its a minor issue. While displaying PC presentations, with larger text to be read from afar, everything can easily be read. When selecting media from my computer to play from YouTube or Netflix this was not an issue.Slide show/Document viewing:I have tried out the picture slide show, and doc viewer. It was about what I expected. I think that almost everyone will attach this to a computer/console/video player for viewing movies and pictures so this is an extra feature for presentations.Projector Speakers/headphone jack:Lets face it the speakers are for computer sounds, presentations in a board room. They sound like laptop speakers, and are an extra feature. The head phone jack would be good for hearing audio from the HDMI or other sources or when you are on the go.All in all the LG HW301G exceeded my expectations for a LED HD projector. Everything I threw at it looked great and after a few minutes of setup I was able to sit down and enjoy a theater sized movie/gaming experience in my own living room. When I view HD content on a 100+ inch screen it makes me wonder why any one would ever settle for a 40/50 inch LCD TV.
